The Beginning

I began working on the VOS (Volume / Octave / Stereo) navigation system in 2005. It was an experimental approach to translating three-dimensional visual environments into musical soundscapes. I developed a comprehensive proof-of-concept demonstrating how spatial audio and music could enable navigation without sight, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become Aria3D.
The system premiered at the Depot Artspace Gallery in Devonport, Auckland in 2012, where it ran for six months as an installation titled “Listen to the View.”
How the VOS System Worked
The core concept was elegantly simple yet powerful: assign unique melodies to objects in 3D space, with musical characteristics conveying visual information:
Object Characteristics:
- Inanimate objects: 1-2 note melodies
- Animate objects: 3+ note melodies
- Instrument selection based on object color (brass for reds, piano for yellows, woodwinds for greens)
Spatial Positioning:
- Volume indicated proximity (louder = closer)
- Octave conveyed height (higher octave = higher position)
- Stereo panning showed left/right positioning
- Object size represented through melodic duplication across octaves or stereo field
Environmental Features:
- Percussion mapped terrain types and hazards
- Bass notes indicated safe passages between objects
Laguna Seca: Racing Through Sound

The flagship demonstration was “Laguna Seca” (originally “Seeker”) – a 6.5-minute audio simulation of four racing laps around California’s Laguna Seca raceway. This wasn’t just an abstract concept; it was a fully realized sonic experience where listeners could:
- Navigate the track through carefully mapped audio cues
- Distinguish track edges (celeste for left, harp for right)
- Identify track features like barriers, grandstands, and pit lanes through distinct instruments
- Experience elevation changes through percussion (high congas for inclines, low congas for declines)
- Track their speed through bass drum patterns
- Race against six AI competitors, each with unique instrumental signatures
The simulation progressed through four increasingly complex laps, introducing velocity mapping, terrain sensing, and multiple racing opponents – demonstrating how layered audio information could create a rich, navigable environment.
From Exhibition to Evolution
The “Listen to the View” installation invited visitors to experience navigation through pure sound, challenging conventional thinking about accessibility and spatial awareness. Visitors could explore audio demonstrations of individual VOS components alongside the complete Laguna Seca racing experience.
This early work established fundamental principles that continue to inform my current development – that musical structure can encode spatial relationships, that carefully designed audio can replace visual navigation, and that accessibility technology can be both functional and aesthetically engaging.
While the original VOS system was non-interactive (a linear audio demonstration), it proved the viability of audio-only navigation and inspired the interactive, real-time systems I’m developing today with Aria3D.
The original VOS system materials, including documentation and the Laguna Seca audio demonstration, remain valuable references for understanding the evolution of musical navigation technology.
